Japan Chemicals Accelerates Asian Polyacetal Capacity Expansion

The sustained and rapid growth of the Asian economy is driving the growth of demand for polyacetal in the automotive and electronics industries. To meet market demand, Japanese chemical companies are accelerating the expansion of polyacetal resin production capacity in Asia. According to estimates by Japan's Polyplastics, global polyacetal market demand will reach 900,000 tons/year this year, of which more than 50% of demand will occur in Asia. Asian polyacetal market demand is growing rapidly at an average annual rate of 4%-8%.

Japan's Mitsubishi Gas Chemicals said on June 3 this year that by 2013 it will increase its polyacetal production capacity in Thailand from the current 55,000 tons/year to 100,000 tons/year. The company will increase the production capacity of the 55,000 t/a polyacetal plant in Mata, Thailand, to 60,000 tons/year, and a new 40,000 t/y unit will be built. The new production capacity will be put into commercial operation from the second quarter of 2013. The company's current polyacetal plant in Thailand is operated by Polyactal, of which Mitsubishi Gas Chemicals owns 70% of the shares and the remaining 30% is held by TOA Dovechem Industries. Mitsubishi Gas Chemicals also stated that due to the limited energy expansion of Thai projects, it is also considering building new projects in other countries, and considering the ease of availability of raw materials and proximity to the market, it tends to choose to build a new plant in Brunei.

Mitsubishi Gas Chemicals currently has a polyacetal capacity of 225,000 tons/year, with facilities in Yokkaichi, Japan, Thailand, Korea, and China.

Polyplastics said on July 12 that the company will build a new large-scale Duracon polyacetal engineering plastics plant at its factory in Kuantan, Malaysia. The 90,000-ton/year plant will be operated by Polyplastics Asia Pacific (KL) subsidiary and is expected to be completed and put into operation in early 2014. The company's polyacetal production capacity in Kuantan will be 30,000 tons from the current The annual production capacity will increase to 120,000 tons/year, and the global production capacity will reach 290,000 tons/year, accounting for about one-third of the global demand for polyacetal engineering plastics. The device will use the company's patented polymerization technology based on methanol.

Polyplastics currently has four polyacetal units, which are located in Fukuri, Japan; Kaohsiung, Taiwan, China; Nantong, Jiangsu, China and Kuantan, Malaysia.

Baoli Plastics Co., Ltd. is a joint venture company, in which Japan Daicel Chemical Co., Ltd. holds a 55% stake, and the United States Ticona Co., Ltd. holds a 45% stake.
