It is believed that the sci-fi movie fans have always vividly remembered the “President†and that the mysterious aliens in the play can use their unique coating to make themselves invisible and kill the death squads one by one. At present, scientists in the United States have recently developed a thin film material that can achieve invisible effects under the infrared spectrum.
Alon Gorodetsky, an associate professor of chemical engineering and materials science at the University of California, led a team of researchers who developed a thin film material that responds to external signals and changes color and reflectivity. With the advent of thin films, objects can disappear invisible under infrared rays. The study was published in the magazine "Advanced Materials."
The key component of this film is a protein called reflectin, which allows catfish, octopus, and other species to rapidly change body color. The protein can change color in response to chemical stimuli.
Stealth in the infrared is very useful in the military field. Some night-vision devices, target systems, and motion detectors use infrared spectroscopy. Anybody wearing a newly developed coat can be invisible under infrared light. The coating is invisible in the wavelength range of 700-1200 nm, which is the working wavelength range of many infrared detection devices.
In order to make such coated particles, researchers need to make reflectin in large quantities, and at the same time need to adopt a method that can send “discolored†signals without the use of chemicals, perhaps using an electronic signal.
