Researchers have developed methods for extracting biofuel from fiber waste such as corn stover and wood fiber in order to reduce the impact on the environment. Dr. Kendall Corbin, a doctoral student from the University of Adelaide in Australia, is trying to extract biofuels from brewery waste. The study found that between 31% and 54% of the grape pomace remaining in the wine is composed of carbohydrates, 47 to 80% of which are soluble in water. Grape pomace contains rich carbohydrates and is suitable as a raw material for extracting biofuels.
Corbin also studied how to use acid and enzymes to treat grape pomace in advance to increase the effectiveness of biofuel extraction.
After processing with acid and enzymes, 1.1 tons of grape pomace can be converted into up to 400 liters of bioethanol. Without these additives, carbohydrates found in most of the grape pomace will be directly converted to ethanol by fermentation, and the same amount of grape pomace will only be converted to 270 liters of bioethanol.
The rest can be used as fertilizer or animal feed.
