NASA is creating a spacecraft that can provide fuel for orbiting satellites

According to foreign media reports, NASA announced on the 6th that it is building a new type of spacecraft, the "Restore-L Spacecraft Bus", which can provide fuel for orbiting satellites. This kind of spacecraft is like a mobile gas station. It can carry out orbital fuel refueling on orbiting satellites, allowing satellites that are about to run out of fuel to operate for a longer period of time.

However, the Restore-L spacecraft will not be entirely built by NASA, and NASA will transfer some of its work to California-based satellite manufacturer Space Systems Loral (SSL). NASA recently signed a $127 million contract with SSL Corporation. The company not only manufactures spacecraft, but also needs to provide additional services, such as the need to smoothly transport spacecraft into space and keep it operational. The entire project will be managed by the Satellite Services Project Department of NASA Goddard Space Center.

Currently, the on-orbit operation of satellites has very limited fuel. When satellites run out of fuel, they cannot continue to operate in orbit. The Restore-L Spacecraft Bus spacecraft will be able to autonomously interface with satellites operating in low orbits and provide fuel for old satellites.

NASA is expected to launch this spacecraft by 2020.
