Study finds that increasing carbon dioxide concentration affects crop growth

After years of experiments, German crop experts have demonstrated that changes in climate warming and carbon dioxide concentrations will have an impact on the growth of crops. Generally, the output of crops will increase, but the quality will decline.

The experiment was conducted at the German Federal Institute of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries in Braunschweig. Experts set up a number of plastic sheds 20 meters in diameter in the experimental field, and input carbon dioxide into the shed's crops to make the test sheds. The carbon dioxide concentration reached 550ppm. According to experts, during the initial period of the industrial revolution, the average concentration of carbon dioxide in the air was only 280 ppm, or 0.028%, while the average concentration of carbon dioxide in the air was 380 ppm. It is estimated that by 2050, with the global climate change, the average concentration of carbon dioxide in the air will reach 500 to 500 ppm. The experts of the institute have used the method of inputting carbon dioxide from plastic sheds from 1999 to 2005 to test the growth of three typical local crops, winter barley, sugar beet, and winter wheat. In 2007, they increased the test of corn. . Prof. Weigel, the head of the Institute, said that the results of the past few years showed that under the condition of increasing carbon dioxide concentration, the output of crops is usually increased, and the average yield of winter barley and winter wheat increased by 8% to 15%. The production of sugar beets increased by less than 8%. However, in addition to the increase in production, experts also found that with the increase in carbon dioxide concentration, the quality of crops has declined slightly, especially in maize.

The experiments of German agricultural experts are of great significance to human understanding of the impact of climate change on agricultural production and the prediction of the positive and negative consequences of future agriculture.
