Germany will ban the cultivation of MON810 transgenic maize

Xinhuanet Berlin on April 14 (Reporter Zheng Qihang) German Minister of Agriculture Ilsa Aigner said in Berlin on the 14th that Germany will ban the cultivation of MON810 transgenic corn developed by Monsanto of the United States.

Aigner said: "I made this decision with a reasonable scientific basis, because MON810 GM corn poses a hazard to the environment. The decision is based entirely on facts and does not have any political implications."

Aigner also said that the decision is just a case and does not mean that Germany is opposed to growing all types of genetically modified corn. She said that the German Ministry of Agriculture is currently drafting a report on the safety of genetically modified corn.

The EU and its member states have been concerned about GM crops. MON810 GM maize is currently the only GM corn variety approved for commercial cultivation in the EU. However, five EU countries such as France, Austria and Hungary have banned the cultivation of genetically modified corn in their own countries.

Aigner’s decision was strongly supported by German green groups and consumer groups. Survey data shows that more than 70% of German consumers oppose the use of genetically modified corn in food.

Analysts believe that even if Germany banned the cultivation of MON810 GM corn, Germany's domestic corn cultivation will not be greatly affected. According to statistics, the annual corn planting area in Germany ranges from 18 million hectares to 20 million hectares, while in Germany, the estimated GM corn planted in 2009 is only 3,600 hectares.
