Green paint is divided into three levels

Regarding the definition of green paint, Hong Xiaoyu of Tsinghua University believes that it should be divided into three levels:
The first is the total organic volatile content (VOC) of the paint: Organic volatiles pose a direct hazard to our environment, our society, and humanity. Coatings are the second largest source of pollution in modern society. The first source of pollution is brought by the transportation industry, such as automobile exhaust and oil penetration.

Therefore, the problem of paint pollution to the environment is getting more and more attention. In the United States, in Los Angeles in 1967, the 66 regulations governing the solvent capacity of paints were implemented. Since then, restrictions on the amount of solvents used in paints have become increasingly stringent. In the beginning, only certain solvents that could undergo photochemical reactions were implemented. Limitations, but later discovered that almost all solvents can photochemical reaction, in addition to water, acetone and other. Therefore, some of the commonly used solvents such as toluene, xylene, butanone, and acetate are all restricted, and ethanol is no exception. In short, we should minimize the use of these solvents.
The second level is the toxicity of the solvent: that is, those solvents that can cause disease when exposed to the human body or inhaled. Well-known benzene and methanol are toxic solvents. Ethylene glycol ethers used to be a common solvent for waterborne coatings. In the 1970s, it was used as a non-toxic solvent. However, in the early 80's, glycol ether was found to be a highly toxic solvent. At the time, such solvents in the laboratory were absorbed and strictly prohibited. For example, polyvinylpyrrolidone is a type of artificial plasma, and its monomeric vinylpyrrolidone was once considered a non-toxic chemical, and I introduced it to the light-curing coating industry at the end of the 1980s, considering it to be a kind of high Dilute efficiency, high polymerization rate of the active monomer, and use it as a reactive diluent to give excellent performance of the paint film. However, it was soon discovered that it was a carcinogen and was therefore banned from use. Toxic solvents can cause direct harm to production and construction personnel.
The third level is to the user's safety: Generally speaking, after the paint dries, its solvent can be basically volatilized, but there must be a process, especially the room-temperature curing paint, and some of the solvent volatilize very slowly. Although the amount is not large, but because of the user's long-term exposure, if the solvent is toxic, it will also cause harm to human health, so be sure to limit the use of toxic solvents in the preparation.
