Research shows that melanin can make plastics have stronger performance

According to foreign media reports, scientists at Jiangnan University in China have determined that adding a small amount of melanin to polyurethane can make its performance stronger.

In the laboratory test, Jiang Ming University researchers Chen Mingqing and Dong Weifu tried to extract melanin from the squid ink capsule and added it to ordinary liquid polyurethane.

The researchers said that even though only 2% of the melanin was added to the final cured polyurethane foam, the results showed that the toughness was 10 times that of ordinary polyurethane foam. Ordinary polyurethanes can be stretched by 770% before deformation, while polyurethane foams containing melanin can be stretched by 1880%.

The research was published in the journal Biomacromolecules.
